Riverside Special School

Wellbeing

At Riverside Special, we believe wellbeing is essential to learning and development. We support children and young people with a nurturing, consistent approach that helps them feel safe, understood and able to make progress at their own pace. For parents, this means clear communication, practical guidance and a partnership that puts your child’s needs at the centre.

Our wellbeing approach includes emotional support, positive routines and strategies that promote confidence and resilience. We work to understand what helps each individual thrive, whether that is through tailored learning activities, sensory considerations, or structured transitions. Staff are trained to recognise early signs of stress and to respond with calm, respectful support that encourages regulation and wellbeing.

We also encourage families to reinforce wellbeing at home through shared routines, open communication and realistic expectations. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss what is working for your child, we welcome your input and will do our best to help you find practical solutions. Together, we can build a supportive environment where children feel valued, secure and ready to learn.

Support in school

Alongside the day-to-day curriculum delivered by our dedicated teachers and support staff, our intervention team provides additional support for students who need a little extra help. Their role is varied, offering both short-term interventions, such as support following a bereavement or with personal hygiene, and longer-term support for areas including speech and language development, emotional wellbeing, anxiety, and self-regulation.

This is not an exhaustive list, and our skilled team works closely with parents, carers, and young people to develop tailored interventions that meet individual needs and help students achieve their full potential.

Where more specialised support is required, we signpost parents and carers to external services and agencies that can provide further assistance.

All staff at Riverside work closely with the children and young people in our community, acting as positive role models, promoting self-esteem, and equipping students with the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to lead fulfilling and balanced lives.
